education :)

my brief conclusion from color theory class today:

In color theory we are learning about the different processes of percieving color.  my professor is a fine artist that resides in nyc – he is very laid back and is not preachy about how anyone should think, feel, or see color.  it has been particularly enjoyable for me to spend lectures doing “experiments” and discussing how things work.  One of the most interesting findings i have had is how different everyone experiences colors – also the colors people tend to gravitate towards….  for example when asked to pick orange out of a stack of orangey hues almost everyone in my class opts for a different shade.  when mixing colors my friend anna always formulate these gorgeous expensive looking dull tones while my paint seems to be deeply saturated and often jewel toned.  Curiousity grows more and more as we discuss and  try to understand others color stories.   hmmmm….  my guess is  our relationships with color evolve throughout our life and are psychologically related to life experiences…. I suppose it could also be totally based on anatomy of your eye – but that seems boring. thoughts?

today i was asking my professor about matisse and vangough and their color process.   IT WAS FASCINATING!  my teacher pulled up these images by Vangough and started to share some very basic art history with me…

you may notice after taking a closer look how much green is actually used in this portrait… greens of different values and chroma.  however it doesn’t really resonate (at least for me) how green this painting is until you really examine each individual stroke of paint.  Van Gogh was a genius – he challenged colors by pairing dull with saturated… dark with light… what he (and us!) find is that colors look different against different colors… a yellow can look completely different when it is paired with a color similar in hue than a complimentary color.

This seriously thrills me.   I tried to do a ghetto experiment using reds and browns but it was hideous so i threw it out… try squinting your eye to see how the colors look different squeezed together.  it is so amazing to just look closer at color families that are familiar – only to realize they are so much more colorful than you ever thought – right now my room is luminous with warm tones…. What is your relationship with COLOR!  gorgeous interactions everywhere you look… :) life is so beautiful.

The man behind Elle magazine: Creative director Joe Zee dishes on his career in fashion

BY Nicole Carter
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Joe Zee is the fast-talking, Twitter-happy creative director at Elle magazine. As the fashion industry gears up for the CFDA Awards (think fashion Oscars) Monday night, Zee takes a breather to share the secrets of his life in the fashion world.

Who is your favorite designer right now?

Oh my gosh, there are so many. I love the crop of new-generation designers like Alexander Wang and Rodarte. And Prabal Gurung, of course, who is a friend of mine. I remember when he was just starting out, and now Michelle Obama is wearing his stuff. Amazing.

Is watching new talent a fun part of your job?

Of course. But I really love my job because literally no day is like the one before. I run to meetings, cover photo shoots, film the show [MTV's "The City," in which Zee is a main character]. I also go to see designers and talk about their collections. It really runs the gamut.

Isn’t that overwhelming?

My brain thinks 125 miles per hour, so any job that was always the same would be boring to me.

So, for example, at a cover photo shoot, what would you be doing?

I have a vision of what I want to see as the final product. So I direct people, whether it’s the photographer, the makeup artist, whoever. My job is very collaborative. There’s no way to do something creative – in any field – if you can’t work with other people.

Wow. It sounds like you are really calling the shots.

I’m not a control freak, though. I like the control part. Not the freak.

Do you ever sleep?

Not a lot.

Is there any part of your life that is routine?

Yes. Every morning, I wake up at like 6 a.m. and get on my laptop and read everything: blogs, newspapers, magazines. I read until my computer dies. Then I go to work. I just really like knowing everything. And at night, I watch all the TV shows that people are talking about. I’ve always had a huge appetite for culture.

Beyond fashion?

Yes. I love music, art, celebrity, TV – everything. And that’s why my job is amazing, because I can express this love in the magazine. Like, for example, for one season of “American Idol,” I was watching it thinking, “Wow. I would love to see her in this dress or him look like this.” So I did a big shoot for Elle where I did just that. I made over the top 10 from the show. It was so fun.
